Target Muscle Pain. Release Trigger Points. Restore Movement.

Dry Needling is a modern, evidence-based physiotherapy technique that focuses on treating muscle trigger points and tight bands within muscles. At Euro Physical Therapy, dry needling is performed by trained physiotherapists to relieve pain and restore movement efficiently.

This treatment is especially effective for musculoskeletal pain and movement restrictions.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling involves inserting thin, sterile needles directly into tight muscle knots (trigger points) to:

✔ Release muscle tension
✔ Reduce pain and stiffness
✔ Improve muscle activation
✔ Restore mobility
✔ Speed up injury recovery

Unlike acupuncture, dry needling is based on modern anatomical and neurophysiological principles.

What to Expect During Your Session

Before treatment:

  • Detailed physical assessment

  • Trigger point identification

  • Explanation of procedure

During treatment:

  • Thin needles inserted into tight muscle bands

  • You may feel a quick muscle twitch response

  • Treatment usually lasts 5–20 minutes

After treatment:

  • Mild soreness for 24–48 hours

  • Improved flexibility and reduced pain

  • Stretching or exercises may be prescribed

Dry needling is often combined with physiotherapy exercises for long-term correction.

Is Dry Needling Safe?

Yes. Dry needling is considered a safe and effective treatment when performed by a trained and licensed physiotherapist. At Euro Physical Therapy, all dry needling procedures follow strict clinical guidelines, sterile techniques, and professional standards to ensure patient safety.

Before beginning treatment, your physiotherapist will complete a detailed assessment, review your medical history, and explain the procedure thoroughly. Informed consent is always obtained prior to treatment.

Rare but Serious Risks

Although uncommon, the following complications are possible:

  • Pneumothorax (Collapsed Lung)
This is a very rare complication that can occur if a needle is inserted too deeply in the chest or upper back area. Symptoms may include shortness of breath or chest discomfort. Proper training and anatomical knowledge significantly reduce this risk.
  • Infection
Because sterile, single-use needles are always used, infection risk is extremely low. However, like any procedure that breaks the skin, infection is a potential risk.
  • Nerve Irritation or Injury
Temporary nerve irritation may cause tingling, numbness, or mild shooting sensations. Permanent nerve injury is extremely rare.
  • Needle Breakage
Modern acupuncture needles are flexible and designed to prevent breakage. This complication is extremely uncommon.

    Common and Mild Side Effects

Most side effects are minor and temporary. These are normal responses as the muscle and nervous system adjust after treatment.

    • Temporary soreness at the needle site (similar to post-workout soreness)

    • Minor bruising or slight bleeding

    • Mild fatigue or drowsiness

    • Lightheadedness during or shortly after treatment

    • Temporary increase in muscle sensitivity before improvement

These effects usually resolve within 24–48 hours and are not typically a cause for concern.
